Baseball

Well the Rangers blew the game. Relief pitching really hurt the team last night. The Yankees are now up 1-0. Lee will only pitch 2 games this series because Texas went all five games with Tampa. Which hurts them because it would have been nice to have Lee pitch games 1,4 and 7. now he will pitch 3 and 7. Tonight SF plays Phi. Great pitching matchup Halladay vs. Lincecum. We could see a very low scoring game. I still think Phi. will win the series to much power in the lineup and three really good starters in Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels.

With the Rangers Series I want Texas to win but getting a lose last night does not help them. I think he Yankees might pull it out.

How about them Ravens

Yesterday the Ravens played a great game of football. Flacco played well and now we can say he can win in Pittsburgh. Having Boldin and TJ really helped this week. With Pittsburgh double teaming Boldin allowing Mason, Heap and TJ to get catches this week. And TJ getting a huge catch for the ravens to take the lead. I don't know what McFadden was doing covering TJ but he bit on the out and left him wide open for the deep ball. The defense also played well with the Ray lewis getting the first INT of the season. We need to get healthy with our runningbacks since all three are hurt right now.
Bring on the Broncos!

Side note:
  • The ravens are currently in first place in the division since Cleveland beat Cin. yeasterday.
  • With Pitt. and Chi. both losing yesterday KC is the only unbeaten team in the NFL.
  • All you colts haters the colts are 2-2 for the first time in a long time to start the season.
  • Keep an eye out for the Jets. Mark Sanchez didn't look good against the Ravens but he is looking good now. Since playing the Ravens Sanchez has thrown for 8 TD's and 0 INT's I guess they should have let Sanchez throw the ball against us.

The O's

The O's finish the season against the Tigers this weekend. If you go to the day game you also get to go to the night game today. The O's will not have 100 loses this year. And sweeping the Tigers could put them in the fifth slot for the draft next year. or they could get the 2nd pick overall. Good luck to the O's this weekend and lets go off season.

Where are the fans?

The Tampa Bay Rays clinched a playoff birth last night beating the O's. They can still clinch the division this week. To bad that Rays fans do not come out and support the team because if we had that team in Baltimore we would be excited and we would pack the stadium. The Tampa Bay Buc. did not sell out either this past weekend against the Steelers. I don't know if is the economy or Tampa is not big enough to support these professinal teams. I would blame it on the economy but niether stadiums were packing it in before. Now with that said neither team was that good back then. Tampa isn't the only one struggling to get fans to come out. We are seeing it all over the place. San Diego is struggling the Pittsburg Pirates and even the O's. Now it might be because these teams aren't that good right now but Tampa Bay Rays are not a bad team and niether are the Chargers of San Diego.

What I see across the country is more fans wanting to watch games on tv. With TV being in HD and now 3D TV has become a lot better way of watching games. You can watch the games with friends and family. You don't need to find parking or wait in traffic. You can save some money staying at home. For the fan staying at home and watching the game has now been just as fun as going to the games. Will teams be playing in empty stadiums in the future I don't think so, but the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL will have to do something to get fans out. I do like going out to the stadium and smelling the food and seeing the athletes live. I go for an experience that I can't get at home but even I get tired of doing it all the time. Sometimes I just like sitting on the couch and eating my cheap food and drinking my cheap beer with my kids and my wife.

Tuesday Update

Went 11 -5 again this week. I will do my picks on Friday. This is the first set of Bye weeks.

The O's play Detroit this weekend for the last home games of the season.

Ray Rice has a bruised knee. The Ravens Defense will have to step up this week against the steelers if we want to have any chance on beating them. The offense looked good but they can still improve. it is going to be a tough game. I think we have the advantage because we played the Jets earlier this year. So we are a tested team. We can play a good defense on the road. The steelers have not been tested so far. The teams that they have played have not been that good on defense. We will see which team has the better defense this weekend.

Tuesday update

The O's beat the Redsox Last night. RAys lose to Yankees 1.5 games back. Redsox 6.5 games back from wild card.

The saints pulled out a win over the 49ers. Reggie Bush got hurt and may be out for 6 weeks.

A lot of QB changes in the NFL. Kolb will start this week for the Eagles. Clausen will start for the Panthers. Oakland has not decided who will start yet. Tenn. says they will start Young but Collins will be ready. Pitt will go with Batch for right now.  All who want Bulger to start well that will not happen.

Lets go Ravens

Well the Ravens are where everyone thought we would probably be at this point 1-1. What we didn't expect was this offense to be so off. With only one touchdown in each game and Flacco missing open recieivers this offense has not looked good. Here are several reason why we lack offense right now:
1. Offensive line- Oher is playing LT this year for the first time and Yanda is playing RT for the first time and we have Chester playing RG. With this being the case the Jets and the Bengals have been rushing four guys and they still are getting to Flacco.
2. Where is Ray Rice- Ray Rice has not been a factor yet this season. I think Cam needs to start running the ball more or hitting Rice in the Flats. Last year Ray was six in rushing and led the league in recieving for running backs. We need Rice to be more productive. Cam play Ray.
3. Hit your targets- Flacco needs to be more on target. We have guys opened but he is not hitting them. I don't know why his balls are lofting in the air but he needs to get the ball down and hit his guys.
4. Back to basics- We were a run offense before. Lets get back to it. Use Boldin, Mason, and TJ after we establish the run. Last night the Colts did that and it worked.
5. To many good players. I think since we have Boldin and TJ we have been playing oout of our game. We have been passing more and running less. I know we have new weapons but we don't need to use them all the time. PLAy Ravens football and those guys will get there touches. Lets win the game and not care if certain players get involved in the game. This is not a rec league that every kid plays and everyone wins. This is professonal football and winning comes first.

Now our defense. Are defense has been playing lights out. But isn't that what we are supposed to do play lights out. This defense that is led by Ray has been shutting down offenses. The only thig I am concerned with is we are not getting turnovers. Yesterday we had two chances for turnovers that would have kept points off the board. Before the ravens defense would be an extenstion of our offense. They get a key turnover putting our offense on a short field or not putting points on the board. This year we haven't down that. We are +6 in the turnover stat.

Penalties- Yesterday the officials beat us agian with penalties. Ray lewis tripping penality and a Suggs roughing the passer penality. Which led to 6 points. So thank you officials for giving the Bengals 6 more points. We will probably get an apology from the league but that doesn't do us any good.

So lets go Ravens. Establish a run game, play hard defense, get turnovers and make key plays when we need them. We need the next man to step up and we need to play with emotion on both sides of the ball. Play like a Raven.

Next up Cleveland at home.

Wednesday update

The O's won again last night. They have won 8 of there last ten winning the past three series and on their way to win another series and the Blue Jays. I wonder where we would be if we had Buck earlier in the season. Whats nice to know is that this team has potential. In the begining of the season it did not look that good, but now I can see what we can be in the future if we fill some of our holes.

Reggie Bush is going to handover his Heisman trophy becuase he supposedly received around $300,000 in gifts from people while playing college football. If he is going to turn over his trophy for this and USC doesn't even recognize that Reggie Bush played for them can we ask Roger Clemens for his CY young awards for lying to congress.

A win is a win

In the NFL a win is a win especially  last nights hard hitting game. The defense looked great. The offense at times looked great. You saw at times what our offense could be. If the offensive line can block and give Flacco and our receivers time they will have a field day against defenses. Ray Rice didn't do that well but we didn't abandon the run last night.Flacco did avoid Revis and picked on Cromarti and Wilson all night.  Ray Lewis and the defense looked awesome. Ray Lewis looked like he hasn't missed a step and he still hits hard ask Keller the TE. The defense didn't allow a third down conversation until the end of the game and they completely took Shonn Greene  out of the game. Sanchez didn't go after our corners as much as I thought he would and Tomlinson had a decent game for the Jets but it was the Jets defense that played well. This game lived up to the hype. It was a hard hitting smack mouth game from warm up to the end.  But at the end the Ravens won 10-9.

Monday update

Yesterday being the first Sunday of Football I will focus on that more but some other interesting games were played this weekend. Lets start out with the Lions game. I predicted that the Bears would win but i also said that the Lions would win 8 games. I thought I might have gotten a win but Calvin Johnson's catch in the end zone was ruled a drop so I lost. The Bengals looked horriable against the Pats yesterday. I don't know if the Pats defense is that good or if the Bengals runniong attack that bad. Ochocinco, Owens and Shippley looked good. Green Bay made me worry since I have Rogers, Finley, and Gennings on my fantasy team, but they steped it up in the second half. RB Foster for Houstan looked really good and the Texans won. This is my upset pick and the Texans pulled it out. The Texans who were 1-15 lifetime against the Colts needed this win to prove that they are a quality team. Redskins fans have to be happy. With a new coach and new QB they looked good last night. Romo and the Cowboys have to improve on offense. But the Redskins won. The 49ers palyed horriable against the Seahawks. I believed that the 49ers and Cardinals woukld win the division, but the 49ers just looked bad. The Cardinals struggled with the RAms so I guess the NFC West is up for grabs.

Tonight the Ravens take on the Jets and Chiefs takes on the Chargers to end week 1.

Other sports

US mens Basketball won gold in the FIBA tournament. The US Team had been critizied for being the "B-Team" but this "B-Team won Gold which the US hasn't won since 1994. Kevin Durant looks like he can be
a superstar in the NBA and now he looks like he could be a International Superstar. US beat Turkey 81-64.

The O's Lost last Night and the host the Blue Jays tonight.

Hamlin won the Richmand Race over the weekend and he is the cup leader for right now.

In Tennis Match between Nadal vs.Djokovic was postponed due to Rain so they will finish today.

WNBA Championship game was yesterday. Sue Bird from the Seattle Storm won the game with 2.6 seconds left.

Texans over Colts
Dolphins over Bills
Bears over Lions
Titans over Raiders
Pats over Bengals
Cards over Rams
49ers over Seahawks
Packers over Eagles

Great early games

22 Georgia vs 24 South Carolina
This is the game I watched. South Carolina won 17-6. Freshman RB Marcus Lattimore looked really good for South Carolina. Freshman QB for Georgia looked alright.

Upsets
Kansas beating 15 Georgia Tech 28-25
James Madison beating 13 Virginia Tech 21-16. I don't think Coach Beamer would have thought he would be 0-2 after week two of the football season.

3:30 games big games
Miami vs Ohio St.
Michigan Vs. ND
FSU vs. Oklahoma

NCAA Football

Great games today.
(12)Miami vs. (2)Ohio st.
(22) Georgia vs.(24)South Carolina
Games I am going to watch Michigan vs. ND. Last week they both won and this week we will find out if they are for real. The other game I am going to watch is the (18)PSU vs. (1)Bama tonight. This is going to be a great game. Ingram will be out for Bama. PSU's young quarterback will have a big test this week going up against Bama's defense. Can the number one team in the country lose tonight.

Maryland is playing Morgan State tonight at home. This should be a win for Maryland, but don't be surprised if its close.

Last Night's game's
I thought Marshall would be able to pull the upset over (23)West Virginia but WV pulled it out in overtime. Houston did not have a problem with UTEP

A little baseball
Yankees lost, Tampa wins and yes the O's won. Yankees are up on Tampa by 1.5 games.

Ray Lewis lets the smack fly for Rex Ryan and N.Y. Jets

Kickoff to football

Last night the Saints beat the Vikings 14 to 9. Both team didn't look that good. I thought it was a boring game compared to last years game. The saints came out throwing and the Vikings ran the ball. To bad for me I started Bernard Berrian thinking that he might actually catch some balls. He had 1 catch for 3 yeards. Can't wait for this weekend. A lot of good match ups. The Sunday night game should be really good with Dallas going to Washington and the other game I am going to keep a watch on is Indy vs. Texans. The Texans are 1 and 15 against Indy. If the Texans want this year to be a big year they need to make a statement and beat the Colts. Another game I am interested in is Falcons vs. Steelers. I want to see how Dixon does and see if the Falcons are as good as everyone says they could be.

Season Opener

The NFL Season starts tonight with last years NFC Championship matchup. The Vikings have revenge on their mind and are ready to take on the Super Bowl Champs down in New Orleans. For us Ravens fans we have to wait a little bit longer for our season to start, but we are playing Monday night against the Jets. What a game this is going to be. The opening of the new stadium for the Jets. The Ravens will be able to show the world their new offensive weapons. The Jets can stop talking and start playing. I can not wait for this season to start. My fantasy lineup is set, My beer is in the fridge, and I am ready to watch some Thursday night football.

What to watch for this season.

Can Detroit win 8
keep an eye out for the Detroit Lions. I think they are going to better then most people think. Will they be the 2008 Dolphins probably not but they are going to be better. I think they could win 8 games.

Moss at it agian
Will Moss give up on the team this year if they struggle early. He is already upset with the team and he has giving up on teams before (Minn. and Oak.).

Hardknocks
Are they as good as people say they are. Last year they made it to the playoffs because the colts and bengals sat their starters. They talk alot but can they back it up this year.

Haynesworth and McNabb
Will they Redskins get rid of Haynesworth. Can McNabb improve the offense. Big test this Sunday Night when they play Dallas.

See you in Dallas
This year could be the first year we can say we have a high powered offense. Can our new additions step up and make this team a superbowl team. Can our defense keep up with our offense. This could be the first time our offense could be better then our defense. If everything clicks and our offense is as good as it is on paper and our defense stays strong we could be playing in Dallas for the Superbowl.

Go Ravens!

Saves

Trevor Hoffman from the Brewers the other day got his 600th save. Where does that put him well at the top of the list. 21 players have reached 300 saves and the next closest is Mariano Riveria from the Yankees and he has 555. How does a closer record a save. The save statistic started in 1969. The present rules are as follows defined by Section 10.19 of Major League Baseball's Official Rules:

He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;

He is not the winning pitcher;
He is credited with at least ⅓ of an inning pitched; and
He satisfies one of the following conditions:
1. He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning
2. He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck
3.He pitches for at least three innings Now is Trevor Hoffman going to the Hall of Fame.

Will Trevor Hoffman go to the Hall of Fame. Only five closers are in the Hall of Fame right now.
Goose Gossage (2008), Bruce Sutter (2006) , Dennis Eckersley (2004), Rollie Fingers (1991) and  Hoyt Wilhelm (1985). Dennis Eckersley tops this list with 390 saves. So it looks like that Mariano Riveria and Trevor Hoffman should make the Hall of Fame.

Random updates

WNBA
I don't know how many of you know that the WNBA Finals will start this Sunday. Atlanta Dream vs. the Seattle Storm. Here are some players to watch for if you decide to watch. Former Duke player Alison Bales. The other person is  Angela McCCourtry who scored 42 pts. last night against the Liberty. She now has the record for most pts. scored in the playoffs. For Seattle keep an eye on Sue Bird and Swin Cash.

Nascar
Chase for the cup is coming up with the last race being in Richmond this weekend. Then its the last 10 races for the cup. For none nascar fans the top 10 drivers can qualify for the sprint cup after the 26 races. Then the last ten races of the year will determine the winner for the Sprint cup. As of right now 11. Biffle and
10. Hamlin are fighting for the tenth spot.

Soccer or Futbol
Argentina played Spain yesterday in a freindly and Spain lost 4-1. Spain hasn't given up four goals in the past decade. Argentina hasn't lost at home in 39 matches.

How about them O's

The O's win again. that is five road wins which hasn't happened in five years. We snapped CC his first home lose in 22 games. And the O's are 21 and 13 under Buck. Tonight the O's have a chance to sweep the Yankees. Brad Bergesen will take the mound for the O's and he will go up against Ivan Nova.

Go O's

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

How about them O's

The O's are playing great ball. Yesterday proved again that pitching is everything. Matusz looked great and then the relievers  Albers and Johnson and Uehara did very well to get the win. Uehara might be a good closer as he picked up another save which makes seven for the year. Roberts had a great game going 3-5 with two RBI's even though he looked hurt from the start of the game. The O's are really affecting the AL East beating Tampa and now beating the Yankees. For right now I don't think anyone is thinking that playing the O's is an easy win.

Go O's

Boise St. vs. VT

What a great game last night. Boise St. up 17 early and then VT cameback to take the lead 21 to 20. then Boise St. took the lead and then VT cameback and took back the lead. Then with two minutes left QB Kellen Moore drove down the field to score a TD to take the lead. VT couldn't move the ball in last minute for a Boise State 33 to 30 win. So let the questions begin. Should Boise St. be in the Title hunt. Should they be ranked number 3. Have they shown the football world that they are for real. Should Kellen Moore be in the Heisman hunt.

Last night proved that Boise St. can play in the big games and win. On a neutral field which had 80,000 VT fans vs. 10,000 Boise St. fans, Boise St. showed that they deserve a number 3 ranking. Boise St. had its ups and downs during the game but they overcame those obsticals to win. Kellen Moore showed that he should be a canidate for this years Heisman even though he does not play at a big time school. When it comes down to it Bosie St. is going to have to run the table and win big over the teams in its conference for them to have a chance at the title game.

Go Boise St.!

Big day for Ravens and Terps

The Ravens acquire TJ Houshmanzdzadeh for one year. They trade Mark Clayton to the Rams for a late draft pick next year. And last Sergio Kindle looks like he is going to be a Raven. His official Jersey number 94.

Maryland Terps had a good win over Navy today 17 to 14. They made some mistakes on offense but their defense looked good. The last seconds of the game Navy decided to go for the win instead of the tie and Maryland stopped them on the one yard line.

Now for the Boise St. and VT game.

Monday update

Great game last night in college. Who would have thought with all the great football games that I would be talking about ECU vs. Tulsa but both teams combined for 100pts and over 1,000 yards of offense. The game ended with a hail mary throw from quarterback Dominque Davis to Justin Jones for a 51-49 win for ECU. Today we get two games right in the Baltimore Washington area. At M&T Bank Maryland will play Navy at 4:00 and at Fedex Field Boise St. will play VT at 8:00.

Yesterday Cal Ripken threw out the first pitch to celebrate his 15th anniversary of tying Gerhigs record. The O's beat Tampa and now play the Yanks.

The Baltimore ravens release Prince Miller and sign Dallas Cowboy Bryan McCann who can play CB and can be a return man. Other news in the NFL Revis is back for the Jets and he should play against the Ravens on Monday night.

For you Hockey fans Washington caps are going to introduce this years team on Oct. 2nd .  you can purchase tickets on there website.

Sunday update

Yesterday was a big college football day.
No. 1 Alabama looked good with a win over SJSU
No. 6 TCU had a big win over ORST
No. 11 Oregon stomped New Mexico 72 to 0
Michigan and ND both won after having disappointing seasons last year.
UNC lost last night but played well against LSU even though missing 8 starters and 5 other players.
Penn State Beat Youngstown yesterday but the story was Joe Paterno starting a true freshman in Rob Bolden for the first time in his hall a fame career in the season opener. So many games can't talk about them all.
monday Boise St.vs. VT at 8:00. Should be a good game. If Boise St. Wins out this year they have a chance to play in the title game so tonights game matters to them.

Now on to Baseball. The O's Beat Tampa yesterday and the Yankees won which increases the lead for the Yankees in our division. With Boston losing yesterday nothing changes in the wildcard. Tampa has a 7 game lead over Boston.

On to tennis. Beatrice Capra lost to Sharapova yesterday 6-0, 6-0

Now to the Ravens
Ed Reed was placed on the PUP list.15 players got waived.
The big names on the list.
Troy Smith, Shayne Graham, Demetrius Williams
Other big cuts in the NFL were Matt Leinart and TJ Houshmandzadah.
Keep an eye for the CB's that cut: Dre Bly from Detroit and Nathan Vasher from San Diego the Ravens might try to pick one of these guys up or some other CB.

Are You In or Out

Big day for the Ravens and the hardest day for the Ravens. Today is cut day. How it works. Today all NFL teams have to submit to the NFL a 53 man roster. OK, here are some other things you should know. All NFL teams can carry a 8 man practice squad. These players can be picked up by any team and must be placed on there active roster. If not that player goes back to the original team. Here is how the PUP (Physically Unable to perform) list goes. NFL teams have two options PUP Active and PUP Reserve. If you place a player on the PUP active they have to be included on your 53 man roster. If a player goes on PUP reserve then that player can't practice or play with the team for 6 weeks, but they don't count on the 53 man active roster.

here is what the ravens have to decide today.

Do they keep Troy Smith. I believe they keep troy because they need a quarterback for the scout team offense. You Don't want Bulger to play that role.

Kickers. Do they keep Cundiff or Graham. I believe they will keep Graham because he is getting paid more money and at the end of the day money talks.

The big area is OL, WR, LB, and DB's. With the OL it depends on who is healthy. If Gaithers is healthy to play Left tackle or Right tackle. With WR it comes down to which receiver can play special teams as well as help them with that position. Williams and Reed look like the best candidates to still be on the team. Harper with probably go on the practice squad again this year. LB is the tough one. I think the Ravens would like to keep them all. This is why keeping Troy Smith is going to be a tough decision. If we keep Troy will have to cut one of the LB's. If we cut Troy we can keep another LB. DB's also comes down to which guys can play special teams. Miller didn't look that good against the Rams. Ed Reed is already placed on the PUP list so he is out for 6 weeks. So that will mean we probably keep Hamlin. One of the CB positions got filled with Josh Wilson.

So the Ravens have to decide which players to keep or let go. Tomorrow the Ravens can also check out who got cut from other teams.

US Open- Beatrice Capra

I know with the O's doing well in August and the football season coming up the US open has taken a back seat for right now. But Marylanders should be excited about tennis. Beatrice Capra a Marylander is making her debut in the US open and is making a big splash. Beatrice who was born and raised in Ellicott City and now lives in Florida is ranked currently ranked 371 in the world rankings. Her first match was agianst 94th-ranked Karolina Sprem and she won. Yesterday her match was against 18 seed Aravane Rezai and won. Now this 18 year old will face Maria Sharapovia who is seeded 14th tomorrow.

So between your baseball and college football if you have time watch Beatrice play her biggest match of her life.

Baltimore Ravens tonight

The Ravens play the last preaseason game tonight. Most of the starters will be sitting out but the rest of the team will be playing for something. They will be playing for one of the 53 spots on this years roster. Here are the key postions to watch for.

Kickers- Billy Cundiff or Shane Graham

WR- Mason and Boldin are starters,  Clayton and Stallworth are on IR. So these guys need to step it up. Reed, Harper, Smith, Riley, Williams

CB- OK, we have Washington and Carr they will play some but who will step up in this group. Josh wilson I don't know how much playing time he will get but he might play some. The ravens will probably play Williams, Miller, Fisher, and Hawkins

LB- We have a lot of them and they are talented. watch these guys tonight because if they get cut by the Ravens they will get picked up by another team. Barnes, Burgess, Ellerbe, Gooden, Kruger, McClain, Phillips

These are the postions I am going to keep an eye on tonight.

Go Ravens
